Indian Table Manners
Food occupies a very prominent place in Indian culture. Eating food is like a custom, a tradition that has to be properly followed. There are few basic rules that are supposed to be followed while eating food, they are:
• Both during formal and informal settings, it is expected to wait for the host or elderly persons of the house.
• Wasting food on the plate is considered bad and disrespect to God. Take only that amount of food which you can eat.
• While having food, it is expected to maintain silence. Unnecessary chatting is not considered a good table manner.
• Using right hand for eating is one of the basic table manners in India. One can use cutlery while eating but Indians prefer using hands while eating. Usage of left hand while eating is not acceptable.
• Chew your food silently; do not make noise while eating.
• Everybody should sit together and have their meals.
• One should wash their hands properly since Indian food is eaten with hands. After the meal is over Indian restaurants serve finger bowls to wash hands. One should be careful while rinsing one’s hands, water should not spill off from the bowl.
• Usage of both the hands while eating is also not permissible.
• While you are eating, you should not share food with another person with the right hand. You can use your left hand to serve food to others.
• Even when you have finished your food wait for others to finish off their food. Do not go to wash you hand when others are still in the middle of their meal.
